These bedpans are made especially for people who have had a hip fracture or hip replacement and are getting better. Patients who can’t roll over or lift their hips high enough to use a traditional bedpan can also use this.

A fracture bedpan is more petite and goes under the patient from the front. This means that the patient doesn’t have to be turned. This makes the fracture less painful and less likely to get hurt again.

How to use a Fracture Bedpan?

You need the following thing to use a fracture bedpan (check the price).

  • 2 Pairs of Gloves
  • 1 Washcloth
  • 1 Chux Pad
  • Bed Pan/Fracture Pan
  • Toilet Paper
  • 1 Towel (to cover table)

  1. Sprinkle a little body powder on the edge of the bedpan to make it easier to move. For accidents, you can put a bed pad under the bedpan.
  2. Help put the bedpan where it needs to be.
  3. Leave the room to give the person some space if it’s safe.
  4. Tell the person to sit up or slightly lift their hips, and then slide the bedpan under them. Or, if you have a caregiver, help the person raise his or her hips as your helper slides the bedpan under the person’s buttocks.
  5. You could also turn the person to the side. Help him or her turn back onto the bedpan by gently pressing the bedpan against his or her bottom.

  1. Hold the fracture bedpan in place and help the person roll away from you as they get off of it. Set the bedpan on the side with care.
  2. If the person needs to wipe, help them.
  3. Put the bedpan in the toilet to be emptied.
  4. Use a disinfectant mixed with water to rinse and wash the bedpan. A small sprayer that connects to the toilet’s water supply might help. Dry the bedpan or let it dry on its own.
  5. Take your gloves off and toss them.

How long should a patient be left on a Bedpan?

When the person you are caring for is strong enough to be alone, leave them alone for 5 minutes so they can use the bedpan, commode, or toilet. Make sure toilet paper is always easy for the person you are caring for to get.
